What Is a Floor-Loaded Shipping Container?

A floor-loaded shipping container is a vessel to transport goods in which cartons or packages are stacked directly onto the container floor rather than being secured on pallets. Often packed from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, these shipments utilize space that would otherwise be occupied by pallets or left unused between palletized loads.

Floor-loading is commonly used for imported consumer goods shipped in individual cartons, such as electronics, apparel, footwear, housewares, furniture, toys, and seasonal merchandise. Unlike palletized containers, which are usually unloaded using forklifts, floor-loaded shipments require individual cartons to be removed (typically manually) before the goods can be organized for storage or distribution.

Why Do Companies Choose Floor-Loading?

Companies typically choose floor-loading because it maximizes container space. By eliminating pallets and reducing unused space, shippers can transport more products in a single container. Additional benefits include:

  • Lower transportation cost per unit - moving more products in each container spreads freight costs across a larger quantity of goods
  • Elimination of pallet-related expenses on the front end - eliminating pallets at the point of origin reduces material costs, pallet weight, and certain international shipping compliance requirements
  • Improved efficiency for oversized or non-standard-shaped products - Irregularly shaped, bulky, or differently sized cartons can be packed more efficiently without pallets
  • Fewer containers for a given shipment volume - Better space utilization reduces the number of containers needed to transport a given quantity of merchandise
